Amazon releases business impact report

Amazon has released a new report into the growth of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) selling on its platform across the UK.

Amazon published its UK SME Impact Report this month, highlighting how SME businesses on the site have created 250,000 jobs across the UK to date.

Amazon said in a statement: “Many small business owners have been able to adapt to recent challenges and thrive online for the first time. Over 15,000 UK SMEs selling on Amazon surpassed £100,000 in sales last year, and over 700 reached sales of £1 million or more for the first time.

"More than half of all physical product sales on the Amazon store in the UK are from independent selling partners, most of who are small and medium-sized businesses. More than 85,000 UK SMEs now sell on Amazon - up more than 25% year-on-year. These businesses reached hundreds of millions of customers around the globe in 2021 - more than half of UK-based sellers exported to another country.

“They also sold more than 950 million products on Amazon, up from 750 million the year before, which is equivalent to more than 1,750 products a minute on average.

“The SME Impact Report shows many small businesses are proving resilient, and thriving against a challenging backdrop, with continued sales growth at home and abroad by using Amazon’s world leading services to help them.”

Thompson and Holt managing partner Stuart White says that the report offers an insight into the opportunities that Amazon continues to create for online businesses.

White explained: “We know first hand at Thompson and Holt that Amazon still has its issues - dealing with black hack tactics, hackers and rising costs in a difficult worldwide market.

“But despite those, it continues to grow just about everywhere that it operates, with this report illustrating the situation in the UK.

“All across the country the number of Amazon Sellers is increasing, along with the online sales that they generate. Part of the report even highlights how in Manchester, Belfast and Glasgow, the sales have been surpassing the average annual revenue of London-based Sellers.

“Whether Sellers are distributing items themselves or using Fulfilment by Amazon, sales are on the up for most. Some of the tools that Amazon has introduced, such as Amazon Launchpad, have helped small business owners and start-ups get started on the site and then begin to succeed. It’s more accessible and easier to start with Amazon now than it ever has been.

“Of course there are pitfalls, and at Thompson and Holt we always stress the use of general good business practise - keeping detailed records, being across all areas of your business and researching extensively any changes you’re looking to make before you make them.

“But in terms of opportunities and access to such a huge marketplace, Amazon remains unrivalled, whether you are a start up business or one that is looking to add selling on Amazon to an existing operation.

“Amid a challenging backdrop across the whole world at present, Amazon is showing that growth and development are still possible for businesses of a certain size if they make the most of the opportunities in front of them.”
