Amazon Suspends Almost 4,000 Sellers for Price Gouging

Updated: May 30, 2020

Amazon has confirmed that it has suspended over 3,900 Sellers for price gouging amid the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

Price gouging” comes under Amazon’s fair pricing policy and prevents Sellers from over-inflating prices of certain items.

The company’s terms state: “If we see pricing practices on a marketplace offer that harms customer trust, Amazon can remove the Buy Box, remove the offer, suspend the ship option, or, in serious or repeated cases, suspending or terminating selling privileges.”

Now that is becoming a reality across the world, as Amazon confirmed in a blog post this week. Protective face masks, hand sanitiser and thermometers have been among the products marked up significantly by some opportunist Sellers as people look to protect themselves from the threat of coronavirus - and Amazon has acted quickly.

The company stated: “We are constantly monitoring our stores for unfair prices and listings that make false claims in regards to COVID-19. We have dynamic, automated systems in place that locate and remove unfairly priced items. In addition, we have deployed a dedicated team that's working continuously to identify and investigate unfairly priced products that are now in high demand, such as protective masks and hand sanitizer.

“We are also proactively sharing information with state attorneys general and federal regulators about sellers we suspect have engaged in egregious price gouging of products related to the COVID-19 crisis.”

Thompson and Holt managing partner Craig Gedey says this should act as a wake up call to Sellers looking to profit from the current situation around the world.

Amazons Dedicated CoronaVirus Price Gouging Team

Gedey said: “Amazon have made it clear from the start that they will not tolerate these practises. It has said it is creating dedicated teams that search the site 24 hours a day, seven days a week searching for unfair listings.

“Given the flood of new listings that has come onto the site in recent weeks, that is a difficult task, but this announcement illustrates the fact that they are starting to get on top of the issue. In short, if you think you can sell over-inflated, in-demand products on Amazon during this coronavirus pandemic, it is only a matter of time before they catch up with you.

“Amazon’s core values have always been about being customer-driven and acting in the best interest of their vast reach across the world, so it should be no surprise to anybody that they are coming down hard on these practises, especially at a time of great need for many.

“Not only is that a good thing for buyers, but Sellers who have always acted in a proper and correct way on the site too. It will allow them to maintain their integrity online.”

Governments across the world have also been taking their own steps to prevent similar practise. On Monday US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop the hoarding of and price increases of supplies.
