What does Brexit mean for Amazon Sellers in the UK and Europe?

Want to know what Brexit means for UK Amazon Sellers? The current situation is nobody really knows however this article will shed some light on the current options available.

Thompson and Holt managing partner Craig Gedey has urged Amazon Sellers in Europe and the UK to start preparing themselves for the impact of Brexit on their businesses as quickly as possible.

The UK’s Brexit transition period is due to end on December 31, 2020. After that date, Britain will operate completely independently of the EU’s free-trade zone.

What that means is that goods travelling from the UK to the EU, or vice versa, will have to pass through a customs border from next year.

And for Sellers using Amazon’s European Fulfilment Network (EFN) and Pan-European FBA, the new customs checks will have some significant implications.

Currently, Amazon’s EFN enables vendors to sell into any marketplace in Europe by shipping orders from a single fulfilment centre within the UK. That opens up significant marketplaces in the likes of Spain, France and Germany to Amazon businesses of all sizes.

EFN simplifies accessing those markets, with all that’s required from an Amazon Seller to ship their inventory to a UK fulfilment centre - at a cost of course.

The Pan-European FBA programme also allows Sellers access to Amazon’s EU marketplaces, but offers faster shipping and automatic enrolment in Amazon Prime, in addition to lower per-unit shipping costs. Again, Sellers ship their stock to a UK fulfilment centre, before Amazon distributes it to storage locations across Europe, speeding up delivery times.

All of this is about the change however, with Amazon announcing that as of January 1 next year, both schemes will stop supporting shipments from the UK.

You can find detailed information on Amazon’s announcement at: https://sellercentral.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/external/9KF67HWNN2FQ2NJ.

What about existing Stock?

In straight forward terms, stock will no longer be able to cross that UK-EU border through Amazon - they are stepping away from acting as a bridge between the two.

The impact of this could be considerable for some Amazon Sellers, as explained by Thompson and Holt’s Gedey.

He said: “In basic terms, if you want to continue selling in both markets after the end of this year, you’re going to have to split your stock between the UK and the EU.

“That means if your products are currently all in the UK fulfilment centres that have previous provided access to all the European markets, you’re going to have to move them at your expense onto the continent.

“You can still then use Amazon to distribute stock to individual EU countries, but that bridge across to the UK is going to disappear.

“That could be a daunting prospect for some Sellers and we advise getting as much information together now about the cost and logistics of moving those products now, rather than wait until closer to the deadline at the end of the year.

“This is another major issue for some Sellers to deal with after what has already been an extremely testing year for many, but delaying your planning serves no purpose whatsoever.

“The other thing to consider is a number of reports that Amazon may stop shipping items from the UK to the EU before Christmas to avoid a build-up of stock that will need to return into the New Year. So the move could come earlier than is currently expected.

“There are a number of factors to consider before taking the plunge of using Pan-European FBA which you need to weigh up against your business operations.

“They include registering and accounting for VAT in multiple countries, dealing with the additional red tape of custom declarations, the increased cost of shipping to two fulfilment centres, and splitting stock, which would lead to the need for more inventory.

“Once you have a grasp on the cost and additional work that each of those will involve, against the current revenue you generate from selling in the UK and/or Europe, you’ll be in a much better position to make an informed decision about how your Amazon business moves forward post-Brexit.”
