[Tips] Magnificent Seven Amazon Selling Tips for 2020

Amazon has become such a vast and potentially lucrative marketplace that there is a wealth of information and tips for Sellers to follow in their attempts to run successful businesses.

Craig Gedey, the managing partner of Thompson and Holt, has seen both sides of the platform, having started as an Amazon Seller before moving into areas that help those who fall foul of the company’s policies. Here he gives what he sees as the key seven tips for Sellers on Amazon to boost their sales.

1. Price competitively

“Make sure you are fully aware of the prices set by your competitors and any changes that they make. A high percentage of Amazon customers simply look for the lowest priced item, and you’ll be up against if your prices are even slightly higher than another company selling a similar or the same line. Unless you’re selling a unique item, be prepared to do some research - and keep it up-to-date at all times.”

2. Optimise your product details for searches

“With millions of items available on Amazon it’s important that you get your product description exactly right to maximise your potential sales. Amazon uses your product information to match a customer’s search to your items. Because of that, it’s critical that you provide Amazon with accurate product information, and as much of it as you can. This includes product title, description, product identifiers, search terms, size, colour. Be as detailed as you can - this is how customers find your products and know that they’re buying what they want.”

3. Prioritise customer service

“This can help on several levels. It can help to significantly boost your customer ratings (more of that shortly) and it can also lead to repeat business. If a customer is happy they are much more likely to come back or recommend you. Take time to address any complaints, stay in line with Amazon’s delivery time requirements and respond to any enquires you have. Customers like to shop with businesses that they know will go the extra mile for them.”

4. Use the best possible product images

“Thoroughly read Amazon’s product image guidelines and follow them to the letter. Now only will they keep you within Amazon’s rules, they will also help you present your product in the best way possible. Many Sellers use professional photographers to present their products on Amazon, and it’s a move that we would support at Thompson and Holt. Poorly cropped and out of focus images from a camera phone won’t help you sell your product - a clear, professional image certainly will.”

5. Do everything you can to improve your customer reviews

“The more reviews you have, the more likely someone is to have a positive impression of your product and buy it. As such you should be constantly looking to improve the experience your customers have with your company, so that they come back for more. And their feedback gives you an insight into the thoughts of your customers, allowing you to analyse and then look to improve certain areas. That is absolutely invaluable. You can read more detailed information on how to improve your reviews here: .”

6. Try to own the Buy Box

“All sellers are striving to own the Amazon Buy Box - but it isn’t easy. If you’re not aware what it is, it’s the box on a product detail page where customers can begin the purchasing process by adding items to their shopping basket directly. Inevitably, those who win the Buy Box often see a marked increase in sales. It’s especially crucial if you’re offering the same product as other Amazon Sellers. But what makes winning the Buy Box difficult is that Amazon uses a highly secret algorithm to determine whose products are shown there. Key factors are price, inventory availability, fulfilment options, seller ratings, and positive customer reviews.”

7. Follow Amazon’s rules

“This is probably the most important one of them all, because if you don’t, then you can find yourself suspended and unable to conduct any form of business. We have a detailed blog on how to appeal an Amazon suspension if it happens here: . But if you have found yourself suspended while selling on Amazon and want to get back online in the quickest time possible, contact Thompson and Holt for a free LiveChat.”
